Cheesemakers to make Swiss at historic site

MONROE - Cheesemakers from Green County will gather at the historic Imobersteg Farmstead Cheese Factory in Monroe on June 11 and work to make a giant wheel of Swiss cheese the old fashioned way - hand-stirred, one kettle at a time.

The authentic factory features the original equipment that was used when the Imobersteg Family made cheese using the milk from their own herd back in the late 1800s, and the Imobersteg's son Arnold, 93, will likely be there to take a turn stirring with the Swiss harp. The factory is located on the grounds of the National Historic Cheesemaking Center, 2108 6th Ave., Monroe.

The milk truck will arrive at approximately 9 a.m., and there will be a completed wheel of cheese by early afternoon. Visitors can enjoy cream puffs and grilled cheese sandwiches while watching.

The event is one in a series being promoted in conjunction with the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit "Key Ingredients: American by Food", on display at Brodhead Public Library through June 17. For more info, call 888-222-9111 or visit www.greencounty.org.
