ALBANY - Labor Day Weekend has come and gone - and so have many of the Carp in Lake Winnetka and the Sugar River. That's due in part to good weather during Albany's 12th annual Carp-O-Rama.

Carp-O-Rama is sponsored each year by the Albany-based Lake Winnetka/Sugar River Improvement Association Inc. Not only is the event fun for anglers and spectators, but helps remove carp and other "rough" fish from the waterways. Removing such unwanted fish helps improve the natural habitat for game fish, such as Bass or Walleye.

The $50 prize for the largest Carp went to Aaron Harlson and Joe Willman, who landed a 12.5 pound fish.

A $50 first prize - from Carter Machine of Monroe - went to Allen Carstensen, Derek Grinnel and John Hawkins, for the most Carp caught. The trio landed 52 fish. A new fishing tackle kit and nature-themed place mats was the second-place prize, won by Katie Gavigan, who reeled in 23 fish. Third place - a Rapala fisherman's tool kit - was awarded to Wilbur Boss. Coming in fourth were Mitchell and Connor Trow, who caught 2 fish and won a fish fryer for their efforts.

At the end of the day, 89 Carp were removed from the lake and river, along with 100 additional fish taken by local fishermen not participating. Prize sponsors included Carter Machine of Monroe and Culvers Frozen Custard. Alliant Energy also supplied a truck to haul away the 89 carp.
