MONROE — After last year’s unprecedented school year, Lamers Bus Lines is looking to hire more drivers than ever to fill school bus routes and charter trips for the upcoming school year. In order to help meet the hiring goals and bring awareness of school bus driving opportunities, Lamers is holding a company-wide open house, where job seekers and the community can come out to see if they have what it takes to be a school bus driver. There will be immediate interviews, school bus test drives, and safety information.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 21.

Lamers Bus Lines will have trainers on hand at each location to give opportunities to test drive a school bus on a closed course. One of the primary reasons that people don’t consider school bus driving is because they don’t think they can drive a vehicle that large. But once they can get behind the wheel, they see that modern school buses have features like automatic transmission and power steering, and are easier to drive than they imagined.

Parents faced challenges last year when students were at home doing virtual learning, and many had to choose between their jobs and staying home to care for their children. Now childcare costs are increasing, leaving many parents in a similar situation. Becoming a school bus driver can help eliminate the need for daycare.

Becoming a school bus driver allows parents to have a job that works around their lives. They’ll have the same schedule as their children. School bus drivers have the same days off as students, and won’t work nights, weekends, or holidays. And if their children are involved in activities or sports, parents can pick up extra work driving their trips, getting paid to attend their children’s events.
