MONROE - October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and a local support group has room for more breast cancer survivors.

The first Breast Cancer Survivor Support Group in Green County has been created to help women who may be facing some of their biggest fears after being diagnosed. The group, sponsored through a grant from the Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee, meets from 6-7 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month in the director's room at Wisconsin Bank and Trust. Light refreshments are served.

Kris Wisnefske, a registered nurse and breast cancer survivor, facilitates the group. She encourages those in attendance to discuss anything they want to share. Everything said is confidential. The group has about 10 members and Wisnefske leads them on a journey of healing, hope and sharing. Coping skills, feelings, nutrition, exercise and spirituality are explored.

Bags with gift items and information about the group are available at the Monroe Clinic's Oncology Department and are given to women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Women of any faith or creed are welcome. Wisnefske can be reached at kriswis@tds.net. Anyone interested may attend the next meeting.
