Blood needed during holiday season

FREEPORT - The Rock River Valley Blood Center will be closed Thanksgiving; due to the one-day closing, the blood center will lose approximately 175 units of blood. To keep the blood supply stable, donors are encouraged to donate prior to and following the holiday.

The Freeport Blood Center, 461 E. South St., is one of a list of blood donor centers which can be found by visiting https://www.rrvbc.org/donor-center-locations/. To find a blood drive, go to https://donor.rrvbc.org/donor/schedules/zip.

Having blood already on the shelves when it is needed saves lives. To be prepared for the needs of patients, donors are needed on a regular basis. Donating blood is safe and simple. Donors must be at least 17 years old or 16 years old with parental consent, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. Persons taking medications are not necessarily disqualified.

The Rock River Valley Blood Center serves as a centralized, community blood center and is the sole provider of blood products and services to eight health care facilities.

For more information or to make an appointment to donate blood, call toll-free 877-RRV-BC99 or find RRVBC on the web at www.rrvbc.org.
