Behring Senior Center offers activities for varied interests

MONROE - The Behring Senior Center in Monroe is offering a variety of activities for people age 55 and older.

AARP Driver Safety Class: This class is a refresher course of road rules, with no driving - it is all classroom instruction. Participants are encouraged to contact their insurance company to see if this course will qualify them for a discount. AARP members should bring their AARP card to class. The class will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 7 at the Behring Senior Center. The cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members.

"Home Is Where the Heart Is" quilting class: Participants will learn how to make "house" and "heart" blocks, putting them together to make a sampler wall hanging. All level quilters are welcome. Beginners must know how to use quilting tools such as a rotary cutter. The class will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays from March 8 through 29. The cost is $17.

Estate of Confusion Seminar: Kay Freitag of Frietag Financial Services will cover four points of estate planning to help participants move from an "estate of confusion" to feeling secure about the legacy being left behind. Learn about four key areas: Avoiding costly planning errors, naming beneficiaries correctly, controlling asset distribution and organizing and planning. The seminar is at 1:30 p.m. March 23 at the Behring Senior Center, and it is free.

Mixed Media Painting Class: Join instructor Tracy Signer at the Behring Senior Center as she teaches new techniques step-by-step to create a whimsical canvas. This class will be from 1 to 4 p.m. May 4 at the Behring Senior Center. The cost is $35.

Trip to the Harley-Davidson Museum and Milwaukee Brewing Company: The trip includes a tour of the Harley-Davidson facility, lunch at the museum restaurant and time to browse the merchandise in The Shop. The group will then head to the Milwaukee Brewing Company, home to over 155 years of brewing history, to view the progression from Fredrick Miller's arrival in Milwaukee to the high-speed production lines used today, concluding with beer samples at the historic Milwaukee landmark. The group will leave at 7:45 a.m. and return at 6:30 p.m. June 22. The cost is $68, with a $34 deposit.

"Above and Beyond": The first stop will be the Skydeck in Chicago, followed by lunch at Giordano's for a variety of pizzas, salad, soft drinks, coffee and tea. The next stop is the Harold Washington Library Center, which is partnering with the National Veterans Art Museum to display "Above and Beyond." Created by veteran artists, this is an exhibit of 58,000 hand-stamped replicated dog tags of every U.S. soldier killed in service in Vietnam. The last stop will be the National Veterans Art Museum, which collects, preserves and exhibits art inspired by combat and created by veterans, with a focus on Vietnam. The group will leave at 7 a.m. and return at 8:30 p.m. July 13. The cost is $58, with a $29 deposit. The trip is being offered at cost, and veterans are encouraged to sign up.
