MONROE — The Behring Senior Center has numerous activities and classes planned. Arrangements to participate can be made by calling the senior center at 325-3173 or to stop at the center reception desk. Participants must pre-register for all programs, including free ones, so staff will know how many will be attending. All classes and activities are for people age 55 and older.
Programs/Activities:
Veteran’s Monthly Breakfast and Flight 93 Presentation: This event will be held from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Aug. 1 for all veterans and spouses age 55 and over. The presentation by Jim Glessner and will start at 9:30 a.m. The Flight 93 National Memorial protects the crash site of hijacked United Airlines Flight 93, in a rural field just outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. There will be no September veteran’s breakfast due to the brat bash. The next breakfast will be Nov. 7 along with Quilts of Valor presentation.
Classes
How to Sell Online will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. Aug. 27 and will cover selling online, eBay, Amazon, Craig’s list and other options. Class is limited to eight people. Robin McLeish is the instructor.
iPad Basics and the Cloud will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 13. Robin McLeish is the instructor and will explain what the cloud is and how it works with an iPad. Class is limited to 10.
Mixed Media Girls Painting Class will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 27 and will offer fun new techniques for the little girl in all of us. The project will be an 8x10 size and the class, taught by Tracy Signer, is limited to 15 people.
Pinterest Craft Classes will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursdays. The focus will be on recycling items from home and turning them into works of art. Aug. 14 project is lighted wine bottles, Sept. 18 project is class T-shirt scarves and Oct. 23 project is utensil wind chimes. Instructor is Liz Sorn.
Programs
Old Movie Summer Classics will be on Fridays in August. The movie Aug. 3 will be “McLintock” starring John Wayne. Movie is 128 minutes long. The movie Aug. 17 is The Dean Martin Variety Show and is 60 minutes. Movies are free of charge and start at 1:30 p.m.
How to Start Your Own Internet Based Business will be held at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 9. Learn what skills are needed, and how to make your online business appear larger than it is. The program is free.
Mary Helen Conroy is back by popular demand with two programs.
Discover the Joy of a Grateful Heart will be held at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 13. Be ready to start your own gratitude jar in this session.
The Courage to Age: Say YES to Life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 10. We hear all the time “Aging is not for sissies.” But waking up to say “yes” in the morning is the best courageous act we have right now.
The Behring Senior Center’s annual golf outing is planned with a shot gun start at 9 a.m. Aug. 15 at the Monroe Country Club. There will be a 9-hold yellow ball scramble.
Movie Madness Double Header is planned for 1:30 p.m. Aug. 16. “All the Money in the World” is R rated movie and lasts 2 hours and 12 minutes. It tells about the kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty lll and the desperate attempt to pay for his ransom.
The movie “The Greatest Showman” is coming to the Behring Senior Center at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 28. This movie is about P.T.Barnum’s life in the Circus with his wife and daughters. This PG rated movie is 1 hour and 5 minutes long.
Pastry Day in the Café is planned for 8 to 10 a.m. Aug. 20. Come and try something new.
Joint Health Program will be 9 a.m. Aug. 21. Join for this informative program on joint pain by the Monroe Clinic Orthopedic Department.
UW Speakers Bureau Marcus Cederstrom is set for 1:30 p.m. Aug. 21. Why do we eat the things we eat? And how do these things change over time? This program will explore what the foods we eat can tell us about immigration and Nordic-American life in the Upper Midwest.
Garbo the Musical will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 11. Join us to watch Jillann Gabrielle for her interesting one-woman musical about the Famous Greta Garbo.
Jessica Michna Performs-Frances Cleveland is set for 1:30 p.m. Sept. 26. Come and learn about the youngest first lady to ever live in the White House and learn about what her public life was like.
Men’s Mini Trip to World Dairy Expo will be at 9 a.m. Oct. 3.
The Behring Senior Center Brat Bash will be Thursday, Sept. 6 and 85 volunteers are needed for the event. Please stop by the front desk to sign up or call 325-3173. People are needed to set up and tear down, an assembly worker for the drive-thru is needed, grill workers, kitchen workers, tent workers and delivery people are all needed and several different time slots are available.
Donations are also needed: buy a box of brats or buy soda or water. Also, there are sponsor levels and donation options available.
