MONROE - The Monroe Arts Center will hold open auditions for a radio show production of the holiday classic, "A Christmas Carol." To be broadcast by Big Radio in December, "A Christmas Carol Radio Show" follows one of the most popular and enduring Christmas stories of all time. Complete with audio and dramatic effects, this radio show will capture the sounds of old-time radio theater in the tale of miserly Ebenezer Scrooge.
"A Christmas Carol Radio Show" has been adapted by and will be directed by Richard Hilger. Hilger's professional theater career spanned more than 25 years, working in 36 of the 50 states and in Canada including Toronto, Halifax, and Winnipeg. He is a former principle at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis, playing Bob Cratchit and Scrooge, among numerous other roles, and appeared in several productions at Chanhassen Dinner Theater and The Cricket Theater in greater Minneapolis.
Locally, Father Mike Klarer of Monroe consulted Hilger for his adaptation of "A Christmas Carol" produced last year by the Monroe Theatre Guild and MAC. "A Christmas Carol Radio Show" production is in partnership with MTG.
Anyone interested in providing voices for the characters of this well-known story may audition at MAC from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10 or from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 12. All roles are open and there are no age or experience restrictions.
Memorizing the script is not essential. A good speaking and character voice, as well as diction, are needed for this production. Those auditioning are urged to prepare multiple character voices, and be ready to read from the script provided. Persons may present extra material. Anyone who is auditioning is asked to bring a photo of themselves, which will be used for the director's reference.
