Silent auction to benefit United Way

MONROE - The Monroe Clinic will host its annual silent auction to benefit the United Way, starting at Friday, May 20 at Monroe Clinic cafeteria, 515 22nd Ave., Monroe.

Auction items include a golf foursome at Galena's Eagle Ridge Resort, a private wine and cheese tasting at Roth Kase Culinary Center, a Badger "Super Fan" package including football tickets, and much more.

Monticello

Student takes part in program abroad

MONTICELLO - This summer, Courtney Scanlan, Monticello, will participate in Truman State University's Spain Study Abroad Program.

The eight-week program grants students 12 college credit hours for work done on a trip to Salamanca, Spain as they travel, study and reside overseas. During a six-week stay in Salamanca, the students will live with a Spanish family and study at a language school. The remainder of the time will be spent traveling to Madrid, Cordova, Seville, Granada, Malaga, Toledo, Segovia, Avila, La Alberca and Miranda del Castaar. As part of their cultural experience, the students will attend a bullfight and a flamenco show, as well as a variety of music recitals, fiestas regionales and drama events.

Scanlan, daughter of Stephen Scanlan and Sue Janczak, is an English major at Truman State University, Kirsville, Mo.

Garden Club seeks new members

MONROE - The Monroe Garden Club will be seeking new members for its next meeting, set for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, at Behring Senior Center, 1113 10th St., Monroe.

At the meeting, Sandra Spotts will talk on "Ideal Locations for Planting Flowers." The Christmas party will also be discussed. The meeting is open to public, and all are encouraged to attend.

Browntown

New guitar class forming for fall

BROWNTOWN - The Peace Church School of Music graduated its first class of musicians on Friday, April 22.

The class included: David Sulzer, Rodney Stewart, Tim Olmstead, Connie Reed, Terry Reed, Pam Brown, Sharon Andrews, Carol Armstrong, Larry Ryan, Diane Gavand, Rhonda Elmer, Katy Jo Vallero, Vicki Vallero, Robert Johnson, Eric Wells, Bart Jackson, Rachel McKibben, Janet Minder, Jim Schramer, Mike McKay, Peter Herman, and Tom Konopacki.

Each graduate successfully completed a fast-paced, 12-week program that included a weekly group guitar class, theory, and many hours of practice. In addition, each graduate received an invitation to join the Browntown Opry.

The Peach Church School of Music is planning on offering another 12-week guitar course in the fall. Classes start Wednesday, Sept. 14. To enroll, call (608) 966-3035.

Local businesses to host blood drive

MONROE - Local businesses will host two community blood drives on Monday, June 6 for the Rock River Valley Blood Center (RRVBC).

Walgreen's of Monroe will host a blood drive from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 717 8th Ave., Monroe, and Grande Cheese and Bank of Juda will host a blood drive, from 3 to 6 p.m., at W2903 Main Street, Juda.

Donors should be at least 17 (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and in general good health.
