CONTACT training classes set for June

FREEPORT - CONTACT of Northern Illinois will be offering training classes in June. Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 13, 15, 17, 20 and 22. The training allows potential volunteers the opportunity to learn about CONTACT, its ministry of listening and community resources.

Training classes also prepare volunteers to assist troubled callers by listening, providing referrals and intervening in crisis.

Classes are informative and cover topics that include communication skills, marriage and family, mental health, substance abuse, loneliness and grief, self care, crisis intervention, and domestic violence. Upon completion of the class and internship hours, volunteers will receive 3 credit hours from Highland Community College that can be converted to CPDU's for teachers. Lunch is provided.

MONROE

'Bash' fundraising event set for June 9

MONROE - The Twining Valley Retirement Community, The Monroe Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Serenity Haven Homecare Services and the Harbor House will host their 2011 Brat Bash at 11 a.m., June 9, at Twining Valley, 700 8th Ave., Monroe.

For a donation of $5, attendees will receive a brat, a bag of chips, and a soda, and carry outs and deliveries are available. Raffle tickets can also be purchased for items donated by local businesses.

All proceeds from the event will go to Monroe Clinic Hospice.

Over the last two years, more than $11,000 has been raised.

JUDA

Hill Climb promotes active lifestyle

JUDA - Juda's first Hill Climb is planned for Saturday, May 21. The event will include a 5K run and 2K walk. There is also a Kid's Fun Run for ages 6 to 13 prior to the start of the race. Organizers hope to make it an annual event.

The Kid's Fun Run starts at 9 a.m. and includes a T-shirt with registration. The 5K run and 2K walk will start at 9:30 a.m. Both events start from the Juda School. Registration forms and payments are needed by May 12 to guarantee a T-shirt on race day, but participant may also register the day of race.

There will be aid stations and awards.

"This is going to be a great opportunity for people to get out and stretch their legs and support programs that are dedicated to keeping kids active in Juda. We hope this race is something that people will come back to do year after year," said Kyle Krueger, a Juda teacher.

"The Juda Hill Climb name stems from the rolling hills in the community. We are going to utilize the Mill Street hill to provide a fun and challenging end to a great race," he said.

Black Hawk War speaker lecture set

MCCONNELL - In honor of International Museum Day, the McConnell Area Historical Museum will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at its new location in the Bobtown Computing Store (former Bennehoff Garage) on Main St. in McConnell.

"Willie" Kayser will be speaking at 2 p.m. about the Waddams Township battle of the Black Hawk War, as well as his recent trip to Washington, D.C.

The event is open to the public.
