YMCA plans Celtic 5K, kids' run

MONROE - The Green County Family YMCA is hosting its first Celtic Run Before You Crawl 5K and Kids' Fun Run on Saturday, March 12.

The race will start and finish at the YMCA. The 5K is for runners or walkers and the children's run is a quarter-mile run through Twining Park. All participants will receive a long-sleeve T-shirt and race goodie bag. All participants in the children's run will receive a YMCA bracelet for their participation.

There will be snacks provided after the 5K race and medals will be awarded to age group winners and overall winners.

Turner Hall plans Fasnacht Sunday

MONROE - Turner Hall of Monroe's annual Fasnacht Masquerade/Costume Dance will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 6. Fasnacht, the Swiss version of Mardi Gras, will kicks-off Turner Hall's 2011 Swiss Heritage Series.

Music will be the Greg Anderson Band. The Fasnacht event is appropriate for the entire family; masks and costumes are encouraged, but not required.

Fasnacht is a multi-day celebration before the beginning of Lent, featuring drum and piccolo bands, mimes, out-of-tune brass bands, local humor and satire, food, drink, and costumed revelers wandering the streets. Turner Hall's Fasnacht celebration, although on a smaller scale, strives to capture the fun and spirit of the Swiss tradition. Food and prizes will also be part of the event.

Correcting heavy periods discussed

MONROE - Dr. John Bazley of Monroe Clinic will discuss procedures to correct heavy menstrual periods at 6 p.m., Wednesday, March 9 in the Monroe Clinic's Founder's Hall.

Endometriosis, fibroid tumors or pre-menopausal and hormonal issues can take a toll on a woman's health and daily life. Bazley will discuss less invasive procedures such as endometrial ablation and da Vinci hysterectomy.

Freeport

Serenade event slated for March 12

FREEPORT - The 8th annual Moonlight Serenade will be from 7 to 10:30 p.m., Saturday, March 12 at the Freeport Masonic Temple Ballroom.

The Freeport High School Jazz Ensemble and Highland College Big Band will each take the stage under the direction of Bill Petersen. The event will feature sounds of the big band era along with modern jazz selections and an assortment of swing tunes, ballads, waltzes, and Latin grooves.

Appetizers and soft drinks will be available. Tickets are $7.50 and may be purchased in advance at the Highland Community College Box Office at (815) 235-6127 or at the door.
