Lecture series begins June 20

MONROE - Great Plains Zen Center, W7762 Falk Rd., Monroe, will sponsor a summer lecture series from June 20 to July 16. The series will feature talks by five Zen teachers, nutritional and environmental scientists, Buddhist scholars, psychologists and authors.

Topics will range from the Buddhist approach to recovery from addiction and the practice of mindful cooking to the scientific basis of meditation, a stream ecology presentation and a creative writing workshop. The Great Plains Zen Center is air-conditioned and wheelchair accessible. A free will offering will be accepted at each of the presentations. Local VFW Post accepting members

MONROE - VFW Post 2312 of Monroe is looking for new members. All honorably discharged veterans with a qualifying campaign medal can join, or transfer to, the VFW.

The VFW Post 2312 will pick up the first year dues of a new or reinstated VFW membership or first installment of a life membership. The next meeting will be at 8 p.m., Tuesday, June 28, at the VFW Post Home, 1428 17th St. Note that beginning with the July 26 meeting, the meetings will start at 7 p.m. For more information, contact Post Quartermaster Mike "Gunner" Furgal at (608) 325-2670.

Events raise money for Family Promise

MONROE - Family Promise of Green County, whose goal is to be able to open this year and provide shelter, meals and assistance for the homeless, will be hold its fundraising events in coming months.

Papa Murphy's in Monroe will donate 10 percent of it sales from Wednesday, June 1 to Family Promise of Green County, and on Friday, June 10, Jimmy John's in Monroe will do the same.

There will also be a fundraiser at Pizza Hut in Monroe from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, June 27.

Additional Papa Murphy's fundraising days will be held on July 6 and Aug. 3, and the organization's kick off event will be Saturday, July 30, at Turner Hall; refreshments will be served, and there will be a silent auction, basket raffle and music.

To make a donation, make checks payable to Monroe UMC, with Family Promise of Green County in the memo section, and send to Monroe UMC, 2227 4th St., Monroe.
