Intro to Zen slated for Saturday
MONROE - Susan Myoyu Andersen, Roshi, will present an introductory class on Zen meditation from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 18, at the Great Plains Zen Center, W7762 Falk Road, Monroe.
Participants will receive instruction in how to do Zen meditation and will learn about the types and goals of Zen practice, the benefits, and how to keep practice at home going successfully. Newcomers and those with experience are both welcome. Zen meditation can be practiced by people of any religious tradition and can help with reducing everyday stress, promoting clarity of mind, concentration and compassion toward all beings.
Susan Myoyu Roshi has practiced Zen for more than 30 years and was given permission to teach by her Zen teacher, Taizan Maezumi Roshi in 1995. She has taught Zen meditation in many settings including schools, hospitals and prisons. Currently, she teaches at Great Plains Zen Center in Monroe, Wisconsin and offers a six-week Introduction to meditation course through Blackhawk Technical College several times per year.
The Great Plains Zen Center is wheelchair accessible, and pre-registration for the class is requested. Suggested donation is $25 and $15 for seniors, students and people with special circumstances. Community garage sale set for June 28
SOUTH WAYNE - The South Wayne Community Rummage Sales will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28.
Those wishing to have their name and address on the rummage sale map can call Renita Berget at (608) 439-5238 or Melanie Pickett at (608) 439-5780. The charge to be added to the map is $3. The maps will be available at 301 E. High St., South Wayne, as well as at 1275 Wisconsin 11 West, where there will also be a bake sale to raise money for Relay for Life.

Father's Day buffet set for June 19
MONROE - Monroe Legion baseball will host a Father's Day breakfast buffet from 8 to 11 a.m. Sunday, June 19 at the American Legion Club, 1627 12th Ave., Monroe.
The menu will consist of pancakes, French toast, eggs, hash browns, ham, sausage, fruit, sweets, and beverages. The cost is $6 for adults, $4 for kids age 3 to 10, and kids under 3 eat free. All proceeds will benefit Monroe baseball.

4th of July festival begins June 30
WIOTA - The Wiota Fire Department's 2011 4th of July celebration will be from Thursday, June 30 through Sunday, July 3.

Grilling discussion at support group
MONROE - The Monroe Clinic Diabetes Support Group will discuss summer grilling at its next meeting, which will be held at 7 p.m. June 21, in the New Glarus room (first floor of hospital).
The discussion will be on outdoor grilling and picnics and if favorite grilling foods are diabetes-friendly. Colette Wyttenbach, RD, CDE will also share some ideas for grilling and summer foods. Attendees are also encouraged to bring a recipe or two for ideas on how to make it healthier.
