Cemetery to offer free walking tour

NEW GLARUS - The Swiss Church Cemetery Committee is hosting a free walking tour of the historic Swiss Church Cemetery starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4. The walk will begin at the Swiss Historical Village cemetery, 612 7th Ave., in front of the log church.

The 90-minute tour will begin with a brief look at the formation of the Swiss Church and the earliest burials in the Pioneer Cemetery. The tour will visit several grave sites where tour hosts will tell of early New Glarus residents including pioneer women, a Swiss veteran from the time of Napoleon, a New Glarus native lost for 30 years, war veterans, immigrants mothers, and a murder victim.

The tour was researched and written by Bob Elmer with Pioneer Cemetery research by Duane Freitag.

To register, contact the Swiss Church at (608) 527-2119 or visit www.swisschurch.org.

The tour is free but a free-will donation will be accepted; all proceeds will help maintain the cemetery.

Kamholz to walk for breast cancer fight

ALBANY - A local woman is lacing up her shoes to show continued support to fight breast cancer.

Joan Kamholz, Albany, will participate in the 2012 Susan G. Komen Twin Cities 3-Day event Friday, Aug. 24 to Sunday, Aug. 26.

She has committed to raising 2,300, and walking 60 miles in three days.

Her goal was to raise $1,000 for every year of her five years as a breast cancer survivor. She has reached her goal of $5,000 and surpassed it.

To mark her five years as a survivor, Kamholz said she wants to "give back" something for all the help Susan G. Komen has given. She is also walking for friends and loved ones battling cancer and in honor of two friends from the Dane County Sheriff's Department, Jane Sheline and Ron Boylan, who passed away from cancer.

To make a donation or join her team, visit The3Day.org. Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds raised by the Susan G. Komen 3-Day events fund national research and large public health outreach programs. The remaining 25 percent funds local community and affiliate outreach programs.
