Apple River

Help needed for bald eagle count

APPLE RIVER - The Eagle Nature Foundation is looking for volunteers to help with its 52nd Annual Mid-Winter Bald Eagle Count held on Saturday, Jan. 28 and Sunday, Jan. 29.

Each year, volunteers start by counting the eagles coming from their nighttime roosts while it is still dark. Some organizations count the birds as a project for their club. In the past, bald eagles have been counted from cars, boats and airplanes.

At least 90 percent of the eagles will be counted before 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The annual eagle count is being conducted throughout the Midwest from northern Minnesota to Louisiana. The count is actually a one-day count with the second day being used, only if weather does not allow a person or organization to count the bald eagles in their own locality on the official count day.

Anyone interested in counting the bald eagles in his or her own area may call (815) 594-2306.
