Argyle to hold free community concert Sept. 4
ARGYLE STOCK

ARGYLE — A free community concert will be held from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, behind the Saxton House at 204 N. State Street, in Argyle. The concert will feature local musician Dave Carper and the band — Carper Diem — and it is presented by Historic Argyle, Inc. and the Argyle Community Fund.

Patrons can bring their own lawn chairs or a blanket. Food and beverages will be available onsite by the Corner Pub and Deli.

Rain location is the Rossing Building, at the corner of Wis. 78 and Wis. 81.

The Saxton House is one of Argyle’s oldest structures, built in 1850 and was the boyhood home of Robert M. LaFollette. “Fighting Bob” spent his formative years in Argyle (1862-1870) and would eventually become Governor of the State, a U.S. Senator, and run for the Presidency of the U.S. as a Progressive.

At the time LaFollette lived in Argyle, the home he lived in stood at the crossroads of what is now the intersection of Wis. 78 and Wis. 81. The house was moved in 1910 to make way for the L. A. Rossing Department Store. Historic Argyle purchased the home in 2000 — at the present location at 204 N. State Street. The home is called the Saxton House for Fighting Bob’s step-father, John J. Saxton, who built the house. The house will be open for viewing before the concert.
