ALBANY - Over spring break, the Albany High School band and choir, along with students from Juda and Monticello schools, took a road trip to New York City. The group, including chaperones, totaled 139 people. Highlights of the four days in New York included tours, performances and sight-seeing.

On day one the students saw Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, Trinity Church and the 9/11 Memorial Museum. On day two, the combined choirs and bands performed patriotic music on the top deck of the USS Intrepid and then toured the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum, the world's largest naval museum. Following that was a city-wide tour that included Central Park, Grand Central Station, Chelsea Market, Harlem, 5th Avenue, Lower Manhattan and Times Square, rounding out the day by viewing the entire city from the "Top of the Rock," atop the 70-story Rockefeller Plaza.

Day three found the group shopping, dining, and sight-seeing in Chinatown and Little Italy before enjoying a Broadway classroom experience at DANY Studios. The students were divided into four groups, and each group was taught a song and dance from the musical "Matilda," which they saw later that night. The instructors were actors from the Broadway show.

Day four involved trips to historic Radio City Music Hall Tour, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Rockefeller Plaza, the NBC Store and the "Saturday Night Live" exhibition, which displayed the fast-paced creative process of writing and producing a show in just one week. Students were given time to shop and explore in Times Square, and ended the trip by attending the Broadway production of "Les Miserables," the Tony Award-winning mega-musical masterpiece.

The trip was made possible by funds raised through the efforts of the Music Boosters organization, itinerary planning by Group Travel Planners, and the work of many parents and students.
