MONROE — Local dairies swept several entire categories at the World Champion Cheese Contest in Madison last week, with many winners in the top three categories.
In the flavored Feta Category, Tom Salzwedel of Klondike Dairy in Monroe took First Place for his Odyssey Mediterranean Feta in Brine; Steve Webster of Klondike Cheese took second for his Odyssey Peppercorn Feta in Brine; and Matt Erdley of Klondike Cheese in Monroe took third for Odyssey Tomato & Basil Feta in Brine.
In the Feta Category, Lactalis Belmont of Belmont, won third place for its Président Feta.
In the Brick and Muenster category, Matt Henze of Decatur Dairy took first for his Decatur Dairy Muenster; and Steve Stettler of Decatur Dairy took third for his Decatur Dairy Muenster.
In the Havarti category, Steve Stettler of Decatur Dairy took first for his Decatur Dairy Havarti; Decatur Cheesemakers too second place for their Decatur Havarti; and Matt Henze of Decatur Dairy took third for his Decatur Dairy Havarti.
In the flavored Havarti category, Decatur Dairy took first place for their Decatur Dairy Dill Havarti Cheese; Matt Henze of Decatur Dairy took second for the Decatur Dairy Dill Havarti Cheese; and Steve Stettler of Decatur Dairy took third for his Decatur Dairy Dill Havarti Cheese.
In the Latin American Style Melting category, Zach Hagen, of V&V Supremo Foods, Browntown, took first place for his Queso Chihuahua, Team Arena of V&V Supremo Foods, Browntown, took second for Queso Chihuahua.
In the Open Class Hard Cheeses (flavored) Category the Shullsburg Creamery Team of Shullsburg, took third place for Bourbon Barrel Cracked Black Pepper Cheddar.
In the Open Class, Cheese Curds, Category, Matt Henze of Decatur Dairy, Brodhead, took first place with his Oaxaca Cheese Curd and Steve Stettler of Decatur Dairy took third for his Muenster Cheese Curd.
In the Reduced Fat Soft and Semi Soft Cheeses, Kristi Wuthrich, of Klondike Cheese took third place for her Odyssey Reduced Fat Feta in Brine.
In the Lowfat Cheeses category, Dave Buholzer of Klondike Cheese in Monroe took first place for his Odyssey Fat Free Feta in Brine; Steve Webster, of Klondike Cheese of Monroe, took third place for his Odyssey Lowfat Feta in Brine.
In the Yogurt Category, Deerland Dairy in Freeport, Ill., took first place for its Deerland Dairy Plain Yogurt; and Matt Martin of Klondike Cheese won third for his Odyssey Plain Yogurt.
In the Yogurt Flavored, category, Deerland Dairy of Freeport, Ill., won took first place for their Deerland Dairy Vanilla Yogurt
In the Open Class, Grated Cheese Category, W&W Dairy of Monroe took third for its Cotija Powder.
In the Prepared Cheese Category, Tom Brunkow of Brunkow Cheese of Wisconsin, Darlington, took first for Brun-Uusto — Brunkow’s Baked Cheese with Garlic, Brun-Uusto; Tom Brunkow of Brunkow Cheese of Wisconsin, Darlington, took second for — Brunkow’s Baked Cheese with Smoked Bacon.
In the Semi-Soft Semi-Hard Sheep’s Milk Category, Team Hook of Hook’s Cheese in Mineral Point, took second place for their Hook’s Sheep Milk Butterkase.
In the Sheep’s Milk Category with Blue Mold, Team Hook of Hook’s Cheese in Mineral Point, took third place for its Hook’s Little Boy Blue.
