MONROE — Experience the sights, sounds, and musical traditions inspired by the breath-taking landscapes of Switzerland with the Monroe Swiss Singers’ 57th Annual Swissfest at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2 in the Grand Hall of the Turner Hall of Monroe. This iconic Monroe event remains synonymous with quality Swiss folk music and entertainment, all for the sake of celebrating and carrying on the traditions and culture brought by Swiss emigrants to Monroe and south-central Wisconsin.
Authentic Swiss folk music, including alphorns, yodeling, accordions, coin-rolling (Talerschwingen) and flag-throwing (Fahnenschwingen) will be presented by Green County’s mainstay Swiss choral groups: the Monroe Swiss Singers, the Jodlerklub New Glarus, and the Männerchor New Glarus, all in colorful authentic costumes. Also performing will be soloist Julie Blumer, accompanied by John Waelti, accordionist; and the vocal duo of Nancy Streiff and Kaye Gmur.
Festively decorated with Swiss cantonal flags, the Grand Hall will open at 1:30 p.m. General seating tickets are $10 and available only at the door. Accompanied by parents or guardians, tickets for children in grades K-12 are $1 and pre-schoolers are admitted free. Following the performance, the lower level Ratskeller Restaurant will be offering a buffet of Swiss cuisine. Turner Hall, located at 1217 17th Avenue, two blocks south of the Square, is handicapped-accessible.
The Turner Hall of Monroe, of which the Monroe Swiss Singers is a member subsection, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. Established in 1868, it is believed to be the only Turner (gymnast) Hall of Swiss origin still operating in the United States. Following the original structure’s destruction by fire in 1936, the current building was designed by German architect, Max Hanisch, and re-opened in 1938.
