MONROE - The 2017-18 class of Green County Leaders started their leadership journey Sept. 13 in New Glarus with 25 participants from throughout Green County. The first session focused on leadership and community development, with GCL alumni and community leaders facilitating discussions on how to understand community needs, process improvement for communities and find funding for community initiatives.
While in New Glarus, participants toured the Swiss Historical Village for an overview of Green County's history and learned about the leadership legacies that people built and left behind.
Four specific community projects were selected during the first session. Community projects allow GCL participants to practice their leadership skills while working on a community need. To date, Green County Leader participants have completed 61 community projects worth more than $350,000 in volunteer time.
The GCL program, which held its full-day orientation in August, will cover various aspects of leadership and leadership development along with information about Green County community, history, infrastructure, government, natural resources, businesses, economy and resources. Classes are held throughout the county as the students complete the nine-month coursework to become Green County Leaders and graduate on May 16 at a ceremony and celebration held in their honor.
Green County Leaders is made possible through a partnership of the Green County Development Corporation, Green County UW-Extension and other area organizations and businesses that donate their time by serving on program committees and as session speakers. The program's mission is to provide an educational program where individuals can practice leadership skills, deepen their understanding of community issues and prepare for leadership roles, thereby creating a network of individuals committed to the future of Green County. Since its inception in 2001, the alumni network has grown to 321 people throughout Green County.
Brochures on the program are available at the Green County UW-Extension office, Green County Justice Center, 2841 6th St., Monroe.
