Senior center plans classes and events
Behring Senior Center

MONROE — The Behring Senior Center has numerous activities and classes planned. Arrangements to participate can be made by calling the senior center at 325-3173 or to stop at the center reception desk. Participants must pre-register for all programs, including free ones, so staff will know how many will be attending. All classes and activities are for people age 55 and older.


Classes

♦ A jewelry class will be held from 1 to 3:30 p.m. July 10. Participants will learn how to make a beaded memory coil bracelet and earrings, post or clip-on. Class size is limited to eight people.

♦ An AARP Drivers Safety Program will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 11. Participants will pay the instructor. This class is a refresher of the road rules. Participants must have their AARP card with them. 

♦ Movie madness double header will present “Hostiles” at 1:30 p.m. July 11. Set in 1892, this is the story of a legendary army captain who reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief and his family back to tribal lands. The second movie is “I Can Only Imagine,” to be shown at 1:30 p.m. July 31. Bart Millard endures years of abuse at the hands of his bitter father and uses music to escape.

♦ Two financial series will be presented by Old National: Types of Investments will be held at 1:30 p.m. July 12 and How to Start Your Own Business will be at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 9.

♦ Pinterest craft classes will focus on recycling items from home and turning them into works of art. Those signing up for all four classes will get a discount. The instructor will be Liz Sorn. All classes start at 1 p.m. Cup and saucer bird feeders will be July 17. Lighted wine bottles will be Aug. 14. T-shirt scarves will be Sept. 18. Utensil wind chimes will be Oct. 23.

♦ A two-day session of Facebook for Beginners will be held from 10 a.m. to noon July 30 and July 31. It will cover the basics of Facebook on day one and privacy and photos on day two. Participants will use the computer at the senior center.

♦ How to Sell Online will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 27. The course will cover selling online, eBay, Amazon, Craig’s list and other options. The class size is limited to eight people. Robin McLeash will be the instructor. 


Events

♦ Middleton Jazz will provide a free concert at 2 p.m. July 17, playing the musical genres of Dixieland, Big Band, jazz and 1950s rock and roll. 

♦ Rich Baumann will provide a concert for seniors featuring songs about farming and sailing, home and travel, love and loss and memories at 2 p.m. July 24. Following the performance, strawberry shortcake will be served in the dining room.

♦ Mary Helen Conroy will return with two programs: “Discover the Joy of a Grateful Heart” will be at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 13 and will cover what to be grateful for and how to start a gratitude jar. “The Courage to Age: Say YES to life!” will be presented at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 10. Conroy will discuss that waking up to say “Yes” in the morning is the best courageous act aging people have.

♦ The Behring Senior Center’s annual golf outing will start at 9 a.m. Aug. 15 with the shotgun start at Monroe Country Club. There will be a nine-hole Yellow Ball Scramble. The cost includes the golf with cart. The luncheon is extra.

♦ A joint health program on joint pain will be presented by the Monroe Clinic Orthopedic Department at 9 a.m. Aug. 21.

Marcus Cederstrom from the University of Wisconsin will present a talk at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 21. He will discuss eating habits and how diet provides insight into immigration and Nordic-American life in the Upper Midwest. 

♦ “Garbo The Musical” is an original one-woman musical by Jillann Gabrielle, presented at 2 p.m. Sept. 11. Learn about the impoverished daughter of a day laborer who became a superstar at age 22.

♦ “Jessica Michna Performs Frances Cleveland” will be presented at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 26. This performance is about the youngest first lady to live in the White House and what her public life was like.

♦ A men’s mini trip to the World Dairy Expo will leave the center at 9 a.m. and return around 5 p.m. Oct. 3. There is a cost for the bus and admission, plus lunch at the participant’s expense.
