Promising signs on the Square

I've written here before regarding tourism and the redevelopment of downtown Monroe. Having worked in the tourism industry for many years in the Mount Horeb area, I've always been anxious to promote the stateline area as people come to and from Illinois, through the area.

I'm very glad to see all the renewed interest in the downtown Square, and particularly happy to see the streetscaping project beginning, as well as the wonderful facade-restoration program. These two things will turn the Square into a "must-stop-and-see" destination. It'll be a pleasure to promote Monroe and refer people to the area. Much credit goes out to all those involved in this ongoing effort.

A couple of things I would mention to further enhance Monroe as a tourist destination. First of all, Sunday hours in the downtown businesses are a must. Imagine New Glarus, Galena or Mineral Point with everything closed on Sundays. It would completely wipe them off the tourist radar map, all those dollars would go to other towns, and big box stores on the edges of town. Sunday is a major tourist day, and shopping day for locals. You must have Sunday hours to play with the big boys.

Also, housing. Monroe needs a better mix of housing downtown. Whether it's apartments or condos, new construction or older rehabs, it is a must. Many weekend visitors from the city may choose to have a second home in Monroe. They'll be looking for downtown apartments and condos, where they can walk to everything. This also is true for the local population. Build upgraded downtown housing, and young and old alike will live and shop in the downtown community. This is a biggy when it comes to getting young people to stay in Monroe, or move to Monroe; also for empty-nesters.

So, good luck. It's looking good. Many, many people are waiting to see the Square reach its beautiful full potential.
