Monroe

To the editor:

My husband and I have had two sons graduate from Monroe schools. Both boys completed high school prepared to move on to the next phase of their lives. We also know first-hand the amount of time, hard work and dedication it takes to fully participate on a community board. Our school board needs members who balance providing an education that prepares our students well for the future and providing good stewardship of community resources. Mary Berger is just that kind of person and who we want to continue her leadership on the school board.

We have been very active members in the Monroe community for many years. I have also worked with Mary Berger for the past 12 years. She is open-minded and fair. Mary gives thought and consideration to all ideas and asks good questions before making a thoughtful decision; she does not jump to conclusions. She keeps in mind the financial impact to the school district and taxpayer, as well as the effects of decision on students and staff.

Mary Berger has worked hard and is an asset to school board. Here are a just a few of their accomplishments:

n Worked with other board members and administration to monitor the expansion of the Aligned by Design curriculum at the high school.

n Approved and encouraged educating our teachers in improved methods for teaching reading and writing, and to launch 1:1 technology initiatives.

n Recognizes the importance of preparing all students for opportunities after high school.

n Worked to approve budgets that are responsible and have actually lowered school taxes over the past few years, despite consistent cuts in state funding for local schools.

n State funding of schools has been drastically cut and yet the Monroe school board has operated with a fiscally responsible budget and actually lowered school taxes, while providing a solid education to our students to help them be successful in our changing world.

n Supported Instructional Staff training and new tools to retain and attract great teachers for our students.

I will continue to support Mary in her role on the school board.
