Howard Marklein's track record and experience make him the ideal person to serve as our Wisconsin State Senator in the 17th District. Marklein's tenure in the Wisconsin State Legislature has proven him to be a man of action in taking the lead on various bills - including one which positively impacted an issue here in Green County.
In 2013, the Green County Finance Committee discussed the need for a referendum related to funding of the Pleasant View Nursing Home. Under the state law at the time, it was determined that the referendum could not be posed to voters until the election set for November of 2014. The uncertainty of the outcome of the referendum, coupled with the timeline of the county's budget process, would have caused the county to create two budgets - one based on the additional funding available and another budget based on no increase in the levy limit. A November referendum would have been problematic from a budgetary standpoint and also a nursing home planning standpoint.
When I contacted Marklein to see if he could assist with changing the statute to allow for a referendum earlier in the calendar year, he was ready to help. The amount of work and time put into this effort went above and beyond in making a statute change in such a short time. This clearly demonstrates that he is willing to do what is necessary to make local government work for those he represents.
