WRESTLING: Raiders' York still unbeaten

PRAIRIE DU SAC - Sugar River senior Kalvin York kept his perfect wrestling season alive Saturday, winning a title at 160 pounds at the Sauk Prairie Eagle Invite.

York (23-0), a University of Wisconsin recruit, defeated Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln's Devin Peterson, 8-4, in the championship match.

The Raiders placed three other wrestlers at the tournament en route to a ninth-place finish (99.5 points). Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln (418) won in a landslide over runner-up Hortonville (271). Pecatonica-Argyle took 14th as a team with 31.5 points.

The other top six finishers for the Raiders included freshman Ricky Ace (sixth) at 112, Dylan Riley (sixth) at 125 and Matt Saunders (sixth) at 130.

The Vikings were led by sophomore Chris James, who finished sixth at 119 and senior Riley Sigg, who took seventh at 171.

Sigg pinned Watertown's David Hanson in 4 minutes, 3 seconds in the seventh-place match.

Pecatonica-Argyle sophomore Ross Gilbertson finished eighth at 189.

ELKHORN INVITE

ELKHORN - The Brodhead wrestling team placed wrestlers in 11 of 14 weight classes and took sixth place at the Elkhorn Invite.

Brodhead's Devin Seitz led the Cardinals, capturing a championship at 140. Seitz defeated Burlington's Nick Jazdzewski, 18-13, in the title match.

The Cardinals had four wrestlers take third place, including Mitchel Wiesenberg (119), Jeremy Rosheisen (125), Cale Zettle (135) and Brandon Hart (171).

Wiesenberg pinned Beloit Memorial's Terrin Owens in 3:52 in a third-place match. Rosheisen defeated Clinton's Bryan Banh, 6-2, to take third.

In a battle, Zettle edged Beloit Memorial's Josh Swedlund, 6-4, to finish third. Hart, in dominating fashion, rolled to a 14-4 third-place win over Elkhorn's KC Verhoeven.

The other top wrestlers for the Cardinals included Josh Mchoes (fourth place) at 103, Jimmy Lewis (fourth) at 152, Cody Spooner (fourth) at 215, Casey Lanham (fifth) at 112, Aaron Pratt (fifth) at 130, and Trevor Klein (fifth) at 160.

DELAVAN-DARIEN INVITE

Delavan - The Darlington wrestling team grappled to a second-place finish at the Delavan-Darien Invite.

The Redbirds went 4-1 in the dual meet tournament, with their only loss coming to champion Delavan-Darien 72-13. The Redbirds defeated Racine Horlick 41-28, Milwaukee Hamilton 59-15, Poynette 39-33, and Milwaukee Bay View 66-18.

Darlington junior Devin Malott, a two-time state qualifier, went 5-0 at 119. The Redbirds also received a big tournament from Joey Meylor (4-1) at 112, Colton Hackett (4-1) at 189 and Mark Brugger (4-1) at heavyweight.

LODI TOURNAMENT

LODI - Evansville-Albany took fourth place at the Lodi dual wrestling tournament.

Evansville-Albany finished the tournament 2-3 in dual matches in a battle against wrestling powerhouses Lodi and Seymour.

Lodi won the tournament with a 5-0 mark by virtue of a 39-21 win over Seymour. In the first round, Lodi pummeled Evansville-Albany, 68-3. It didn't get any easier in the second round, when Seymour defeated Evansville-Albany, 46-15.

Evansville-Albany won its next two matches - a 69-6 rout of Wisconsin Heights, and a 42-26 victory over Waunakee. Evansville-Albany closed the tournament with a 57-14 loss to Neenah.
