VERONA - Wiota rallied for four runs in the ninth inning and came up just short of upsetting No. 1 seed Verona losing 12-10 in a Home Talent League second-round playoff game Sunday, Aug. 11.
Wiota (12-6) trailed 12-6 in the ninth inning and nearly capped an improbable comeback. Both teams pounded out 14 hits and committed three errors.
"When you score 10 runs you would like to think you can win the ballgame," Wiota manager Dick Schliem said. "It's tough because we had a shot at them.
Wiota jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first inning. Wiota starting pitcher Jeff Solberg pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up six unearned runs. The Indians committed two errors in the first two innings that sparked a five-run second to give Verona a 6-4 lead.
"That really hurt us," Schliem said of the errors. "You can't give a team like that extra outs."
Wiota's Kory Tuescher went 3-for-5 to lead the Indians. Merill Brunson went 3-for-6, Jay Halidman was 2-for-5 and Brad Schliem was 2-for-6.
Wiota's Justin Doyle pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief and gave up three earned runs on three hits. Nick Flannery pitched four innings in relief and gave up three earned runs on five hits. He struck out four and walked three.
