NEW GLARUS - New Glarus Middle-High School physical education teacher Brittany Spencer used experience from her student teaching days to help land a $1,085 grant to fund disc golf equipment.

Madison-resident Spencer, who is in her first year teaching in the New Glarus district, was well aware of the website So she placed an ad on the site seeking contributions for disc golf equipment for her school's physical education department.

She received an e-mail Oct. 29 informing her that U.S. Cellular would contribute $1,085 to the New Glarus School District effort.

Now Spencer says she is excited about using portable disc golf in the curriculum.

"It will give us the equipment to expose kids to a sport they are not as familiar with," Spencer said. "For them to buy the discs, it makes us that much closer to our ultimate goal."

The site allows individuals and companies to make contributions to support various requests. Spencer was relieved that she no longer has to seek donations from parents.

"I knew that we had nothing to lose," Spencer said.

New Glarus will receive four metal disc golf baskets and three sets of discs that includes a putter and driver.

"My next step is to get five more baskets," she said.

Spencer said the goal is to have nine baskets so that she could have students design disc golf courses - for various skill levels - as part of a physical education unit.

Spencer said the equipment will arrive in about four weeks.
