MONROE - The Monroe girls swimming team with a month until the Badger Conference meet is looking to fine-tune each stroke in the water.
The Cheesemakers had a golden opportunity against Badger South power Stoughton Tuesday, Oct. 8 at the Green County YMCA. Stoughton won all 11 events en route to knocking off the Cheesemakers 119-50. The Vikings swept the top three spots in the 200-meter individual medley, the 100 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke.
"I think the pressure is getting to them," Monroe coach Linda Moser said. "They know we are coming up to crunch time."
The Cheesemakers have two more conference dual meets hosting Madison Edgewood on Senior Night Tuesday, Oct. 15 and a dual at Milton Tuesday, Oct. 22. The Cheesemakers have two invites at Fort Atkinson Oct. 19 and at Platteville Saturday, Oct. 26 before the conference meet Friday, Nov. 1.
Monroe sophomore Anna Meritt finished second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 32.80 seconds.
"Anna swam some really great races," Moser said.
Monroe freshman Skylar Lassen took second in the 400 freestyle 5:26.13 and sophomore Abby Oudinot finished second in the 50 freestyle (31.01).
"That might be a PR for her," Moser said of Lassen in the 400 freestyle.
Getting splits down remains an area Moser wants her team to focus in on.
"Tonight our splits were not where they need to be," Moser said. "The splits should be no more than two seconds apart for 50s and 100s. It's just something we really need to work on. We have to do more sets in practice to build their endurance."
Monroe senior Angie Beaver teamed with Oudinot, Meritt and Lassen to finish second place in the 400 freestyle relay (4:50.69). The Cheesemakers' 200 medley relay of Beaver, Monica Sefcik, Oudinot and Lassen finished second with a time of 2:29.55. Oudinot's time in the 50 freestyle was just two seconds away from Stoughton's Eva Anderson (29.90).
Moser said she's still trying to find the best mix of swimmers in various relays before the conference meet. We are not where we need to be yet," Moser said. "I have seen some improvements every single meet. As long as we keep moving that direction we will be OK. Looking at what is going on in the conference, I'm hoping our 400 free relay can place in the top five. I'm hoping our 200 free relay can be in the top five."
Moser said the team has been working on faster rotations with their arms.
"I felt the rotations were better tonight and I saw more kicking," she said. "It's the flip turns, starts and kicking that will pay off in the end," Moser said.
