MADISON - Monroe junior Silas Setterstrom's season ended Thursday in the first round of the WIAA Division 2 state tennis tournament at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
In a rematch of a sectional match, Whitewater junior Brodie Runez defeated Setterstrom 6-4, 6-2.
"Today was not what Silas had hoped for," Monroe coach Ashley Hermanson said.
Setterstrom jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set.
"After the changeover Runez got some fire under his racket and started hitting shots Silas couldn't get to," Hermanson said. "Silas fought hard and gave everything he had but turned up short tonight."
Setterstrom defeated Runez in 6-2, 6-1 in an East Troy sectional match last week on his way to a third-place finish and his first state berth.
Setterstrom ends the season with a 12-11 record in his first year playing No. 1 singles.
"Silas came a long way this season playing No. 1 singles and should be honored to have made it into the state tournament," Hermanson said. "It's only uphill from here for Silas, who looks to have another great year next year."
