Squirt A split two games

MADISON - Four Avalanche Squirt A players were on the scoreboard when they defeated Oregon Squirt A 4-2 Saturday, March 1.

Rob Schroeder scored the first goal for the Avalanche on assists from Hayden Roth and Alyssa Knauf. Anna Malone scored an unassisted goal.

Tessa Janecke lit the lamp, with an assist from Roth. Blaze Janecke scored the last goal with assists from Schroeder and Jack Leverton. The Avalanche outshot them 34-19.

On Sunday, March 2 the Squirt A team fell to Middleton 3-1 with Tessa Janecke scoring the lone Avalanche goal. Goalie Aiden Runkle recorded 14 saves. The Squirt team's overall record stands at 26-8-1.

The Avalanche Squirt A team will be vying for the state title in the 2014 WAHA Squirt 3A State Tournament March 7-9 in Sheboygan.



U12/U14 Girls

The Avalanche U12/U14 girls team lost a hard-fought game 3-2 to the U12 DC Diamonds.

Monroe's Anika Einbeck started the game scoring with an unassisted goal. The DC Diamonds responded with two goals in the second period and one in the third.

Haley Knauf put one in the net with assists from Cammi Ganshert and Lilah Bauer. Goalie Jenna Schmerbach recorded 27 saves. The Avalanche outshot the DC Diamonds 29-20. The last Avalanche girls games will be in Dubuque on March 15 and at home at 11 a.m. March 16.



Mite Blue

The Monroe Avalanche Mite Blue team traveled to Baraboo March 1-2 for the eighth annual Logan Klemm Memorial Mite Tournament. This was the Mite Blue's first experience playing full ice.

In the first game, the Avalanche faced off against the Baraboo T-Birds and lost a tough battle 7-2. Just 22 seconds into the game, the Avalanche's Brody Koehn scored a goal on an assist from Alex Beer. Just over a minute later, Landon Grindey tallied the Avalanche's second goal for the game on a breakaway. The Avalanche fought hard but the T-Birds took control of the game. Goalie Payton O'Connor recorded 26 saves for the Avalanche.

In Game 2 of the tournament, Monroe matched up against the Kenosha Komets. The Komets shut out a much smaller and younger Avalanche team, 5-0. Goalie Payton O'Connor had nine saves. Shots on goal for the Avalanche included: Jack Rikkers, Jalyn Schmid, Brody Koehn, Alex Beer and Mack Massingill.

The final game of the tournament, held Sunday, March 2, pitted the Avalanche against the West Salem Wild. The team played hard but fell to the Wild, 8-1. The Wild began the scoring midway through the first period, but the Avalanche answered with an unassisted goal by Mack Massingill just minutes later. The Avalanche skated hard, but ultimately it was no match for the Wild. Goalie Payton O'Connor had nine saves.



Pee Wee B

On Sunday, Feb. 16 the Monroe Avalanche Pee Wee B team took to the ice against the Wildcats of Waunakee during a league game at SLICE Arena. In the first period, it was Waunakee that scored three unanswered goals with less than three minutes to play in the period, making it 3-0 after one. At the start of the second period, it was Monroe that took it to the Wildcats and scored two unanswered goals to bring the Avalanche within one. The first goal was scored by Ryan Molitor who found the back of the net off a rebound from Colton O'Connor. O'Connor was recorded with the assist. The second goal came from Rebekah Rath who slapped in a shot off a rebound from Bryce Montgomery. Montgomery was recorded with the assist and the Avalanche were back in the game.

Unfortunately, the Wildcats answered that goal with two more of their own ending the second period 5-2. In the third period, Monroe did not sit idly by as they were able to connect on a power play goal with a passes from Rath and Kendall Wild to Montgomery who was sitting in front of the net and lit the lamp to bring the Avalanche back within two. The Wildcats eventually scored two more goals ending the game 7-3. Bear recorded 25 saves in that game.

In this past weekend play, the Monroe Avalanche Pee Wee B team split two games, beating Beloit B at home 2-1 on Saturday, March 1 and then losing to Janesville B team 2-1 in Janesville on Sunday, March 2. During the home game on Saturday, The Beloit Blades opened the scoring two minutes into the game. No other scoring occurred until the third period, when Riley Jones lit the lamp from a pass from defenseman Alex Henry to tie the game up at the 10-minute mark of the third.

The Avalanche were able to break the tie with their final goal by Colton O'Connor off a pass from Ty O'Connor with five minutes to go in the game. The Avalanche held on for the win with goaltender Heath Bear recording 15 saves.

In game two against Janesville Sunday afternoon it was a rough game from start to finish with 14 penalties called in the game. Bear recorded 16 of his 29 saves of the game in the first period alone. The second period started off with a bang for Janesville as they scored just 55 seconds in, taking a 2-0 lead. Recording the goal for the Avalanche in the second period was Ryan Molitor who put in a rebound from Kaiden Klitzke's rifle shot to cut Janesville's lead to 2-1 with seven minutes to go in the second period.

The third period remained scoreless and although the Avalanche pulled their goalie in the final minute of the game, they were not able to tie the game up. Bear recorded 29 saves on the game. The Monroe Pee Wee B team will end their regular season at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, March 9 in Dodgeville.
