COLUMBUS - What a difference a night makes.

Even though the Glarner Knights dropped a 2-1 softball decision at Columbus, they did it to a Capitol contender just one night after New Glarus coach Bob Wahl said his club couldn't play any worse.

"I just can't possibly say enough for the effort tonight," Wahl said.

His club bounced back nimbly after allowing a run through just two batters. Ace Keriann Schmidt buckled down after her sophomore sister gunned down a base stealer. The elder sister recorded seven of the first nine outs via strikeout.

Kelsey Bartel had the game-tying RBI-single in the fifth after Kayla Hagen worked a leadoff walk. Taneesha Waldner sacrificed her over and Ali Wiegel hit a grounder on the right side to move Hagen to third.

"That's just softball the way it should be," Wahl said.

While Columbus manufactured the game-winning run in the sixth, New Glarus only commited one error all game, even after Schmidt's strikeout tear subsided.

The Knights turn around to play Pecatonica in Hollandale tonight.

MONTICELLO 12, JUDA 2

The Ponies galloped out to a quick start and never looked back, as they soundly defeated the Panthers.

Mary Hershberger pitched a complete game, giving up two hits and one walk. She also struck out two batters.

Hershberger contributed offensively, as well. She was 4-for-4 at the plate, with a triple and three RBIs. Alicia Klassy, Mackenzie Hilliard, Sadie Hilliard and Lexi Flesher each had two hits for Monticello.

"It really helps a lot when our first two batters get on base. They have a lot of speed and that helps our three and four hitters," he said.

The Ponies jumped out to a 3-1 lead by the bottom of the first. They added one run in the second, before blowing the game wide open with five runs in the third. Leading 9-2 after three, Monticello added two more runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth.

Melanie Pehl took the loss for Juda. Monticello, (1-0 in conference, 1-1 overall) hosts Albany on Thursday.

BARNEVELD 12, ALBANY 4

The Eagles took their lumps before taking it out on the little yellow ball Tuesday night.

After the first two Barneveld batters were hit by pitches to lead off the top of the sixth inning in a Six Rivers East game at Albany, the Eagles made good for five runs that all but put the game away.

"This was the best-hitting Barneveld team I've seen in a long time," Albany coach Connie Wunschel said.

Four Eagles had multiple hits, including sophomore starter Kelly Mueller, who added a single and a triple to her seven innings worked.

Albany travels to Monticello for another conference game Thursday.

BLACK HAWK 7, PECATONICA 4

With hits at a premium against Pecatonica starter Mallory Massey, the Warriors had to take advantage of every opportunity to escape with a Six Rivers East victory on the road Tuesday night.

Black Hawk senior Jenny Mair led off the top of the sixth inning with a double and eventually scored, as the Warriors added two runs to a 5-3 lead, all but wrapping up the victory.

The Vikings committed six errors, while Black Hawk managed just three hits.

"We need to turn that corner," Pecatonica coach Chuck Meyer said. "It's not the outstanding plays we need to start making, it's the routine ones."

BOSCOBEL 10, DARLINGTON 0

With a solid lineup top to bottom, Boscobel simply was too much for Darlington on Tuesday night.

The Redbirds found themselves down 9-0 after two innings in the road SWAL game. That was plenty of support for Hannah Cornell, who went the distance on the pitching plate and struck out eight 'Birds, while walking none.

Three Bulldogs had multiple hits in the victory.
