JUDA - The top senior basketball players will come together one more time to play in the ninth annual Six Rivers Conference All-Star game Friday that pits East schools against their West counterparts.
Black Hawk girls basketball coach Mike Flanagan, who is serving as an assistant coach under Argyle coach Kurt Ritschard, said the event raises about $1,000 a year and has raised more than $10,000 for the American Family Children's Hospital in Madison. The girls all-star game will tip off at 6 p.m. Friday at Juda High School and the boys all-star game will follow. After the girls' game, there will be a 3-point contest before the boys' game. Each coach will select three shooters, and the East will be competing against the West. Each shooter will have four minutes. During the first three minutes each 3-pointer made counts as one point, and in the final one minute each 3-pointer made counts as two points.
"It's an effort to keep it fresh," Flanagan said of adding the 3-point contest. "We want to keep it strong. We don't want it to die. We are just adding one more thing to make it more interesting."
Admission to the all-star games is a free-will offering. Flanagan said players are not requested to raise money like some players are required to do if they are selected to play in the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-Star game. Those players selected to play in the WBCA All-Star game are required to raise at least $500. Flanagan said having players raise at least $50 to play may be something they add down the road.
"We haven't pulled the trigger on anything like that yet," he said. "We could raise some more money. I don't think it would be too demanding to have them raise $50."
The all-star game was started by former Black Hawk boys basketball coach Jerry Mortimer. Flanagan is excited to see the fundraiser continue since it brings players and coaches together in the summer for a cause.
"It's neat we have been able to sustain it," Flanagan said.
