COTTAGE GROVE - The Monroe baseball team managed two hits and lost a Badger South Conference showdown to Monona Grove 6-1.

Monroe (11-10, 5-7 Badger South) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on senior Taylor Riese's RBI single that knocked in Drew Nafzger. Monroe junior Michael Turek was 1-for-3.

The Cheesemakers did leave several runners on base.

"That's kind of been how it's going lately," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "We have been hitting the ball hard at times. We can't seem to string enough big hits together."

The Silver Eagles gave themselves a cushion with a four-run third. Monroe senior Kris Rieder pitched five innings and gave up six earned runs on seven hits. He struck out five and walked three.

Logan Wells threw a shutout inning in relief and struck out three.

Huffman is giving the team the day off before the Cheesemakers get back to practice and prepare to open WIAA Division 2 regional at home against Mount Horeb Friday. "We want them to clear their heads and erase the slate," Huffman said.
