Rufenacht provides spark that starts fire

PLATTEVILLE - Prehistoric people wish they'd had Monroe's Emily Rufenacht around in their era, because she knows how to start a fire.

The junior guard drilled an innocent triple in the third quarter that sparked a 14-0 run and propelled Monroe to a 45-27 non-conference girls basketball road victory over Platteville on Tuesday night.

Rufenacht finished with seven points and Ashley Hermanson added four of her eight points in the Monroe run. Cheesemakers head coach Kevin Keen was waiting for the shots to fall as the Cheesemakers (9-2 overall) worked around the Hillmen (4-8 overall) zone in the first quarter.

"We had a lot of open looks and just couldn't make a shot," Keen said. "You gotta knock down shots against a zone."

Sophomore Gwen Sutter led Monroe with nine points and classmate Jamie Armstrong added eight points.

Monroe cranked up the man-to-man intensity at halftime and came through with a 15-5 third quarter advantage.

"That's been pretty much our focus all season," Keen said.

Monroe resumes Badger South play Friday when Oregon comes to town. The Panthers will be seeking revenge after Rufenacht put them away with a triple with seven seconds left in a 41-38 win on Dec. 20 in Oregon.
