DARLINGTON - After battling high winds all day, the Darlington-Cuba City girls golf team finished one stroke behind Lancaster at the SWAL Conference meet Wednesday.
The Redbirds finished second with a team score of 394, one stroke behind Lancaster's 393. The Flying Arrows were led in large part by Ella Marcue's 90, which was the lowest score of the meet.
Darlington-Cuba City coach Gary Ringen was impressed by Marcue's score considering the wind that swirled through course Wednesday.
"The wind was very very strong," Ringen said. "(Marcue's score) was unbelievable on a day like today."
Senior Naomi Black led the way for the Redbirds with a 96. Senior Nikki Zimmerman was second on the team with a 97, followed by senior Kayla Paquette (98), junior Sami Poss (103) and senior Tina Kurschner (103).
While the Redbirds were over their averages, Ringen was pleased that his team stayed competitive.
"Our number one was a little over her average," he said. "But we had three of the top five."
The Redbirds (30-2) will now play in the regionals, which will be held Tuesday at the Yahara Hills Golf Course in Madison, along with Lancaster, Prairie du Chien, Southwestern, Beloit-Turner, Edgerton, Cambridge, McFarland and Madison Edgewood, the number one-ranked team in the state.
The top four teams from the nine-team regional will move onto sectionals. Ringen said he likes his team's chances.
"Score-wise, in looking at the other teams ... I think we have as good a chance as any of the others," Ringen said. "Whoever's on that day ... they'll be the ones to go on."
In preparation, Ringen simply told his girls to get some practice in.
"I told them to play some golf over the weekend, and I know some of the girls are going to go up (to Yahara) to practice, "I think if we go up and play our regular game, we should be in the top four, but we can't be giving away strokes either."
