Raiders win boys, girls titles

BELLEVILLE - Both the Sugar River boys and girls track teams won Capitol South Conference championships for the second straight year Tuesday.

The Sugar River boys outdistanced Marshall 116-87 for the team title. The Raiders' girls team defeated Marshall, 138-109.

Sugar River senior Travis Beutler won a conference championship in the 3,200-meter run by more than 10 seconds with a time of 10 minutes, 15.1 seconds. Senior Colton Crye won a conference championship in the discus (140 feet).

Senior Dennis Haak won a conference title in the 800 (2:02.2), just ahead of teammate Beau York (2:06.7). Haak also won the 1,600 (4:35.5). Senior Brian Anderson finished first in the 300 hurdles (:42.2) and sophomore Wesley Morgan won the pole vault (11-6).

The Raiders won both the 1,600 and 3,200 relays. The 1,600 relay team of Haak, Anderson, Morgan and York finished first with a time of 3:36.4. The Raiders' 3,200 relay team of Anderson, Beutler, Morgan and York took first with a time of 8:15.3, which was 1.5 seconds ahead of Cambridge.

Junior Jessica Putland won conference championships in the shot put (31-8 1/2) and in the discus (104-3).

Junior Ashley Brusveen won the high jump (5-1), sophomore Victoria Ortgiesen finished first in the 100 hurdles (:17.4) and sophomore Sam Stecha won the triple jump (28-10).

Sugar River freshman Alexis Hanson finished second in three individual events including the 100 (:13.3), 200 (:28.3) and 400 (1:04.3).

The Sugar River girls track team, like the boys, won both the 1,600 and 3,200 relays. The Raiders' 1,600 relay team of Rachel Miller, Savanna Atkins, Emily Diaz and Victoria Ortgiesen finished first with a time of 4:23.5. The 3,200 relay team of Amanda Kaiser, Katie Schmitz, Jamie Brown and Madeline Brunner won with a time of 10:37.7, which was about six seconds faster than Waterloo.

The Raiders' 800 relay team of Megan Neperud, Atkins, Sofia Julian and Sabrina Popenfus took first with a time of 1:59.

Miller took second in the 800 (2:28.9), which was 1.3 seconds behind champion Ashleigh Giese of Marshall and Brunner added a second-place finish in the long jump (15-1).
