ARGYLE - Junior Colton Ploessl pitched a no-hitter to lead Argyle to a 15-0 win over Black Hawk in a WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal game Wednesday.
Ploessl was just one error away from throwing a perfect game. He struck out five and didn't issue a walk.
"It's the way I have known he has been capable of pitching all the time," Argyle coach Chuck Bredeson said. "He kept the ball down and threw strikes."
Three of Ploessl's strikeouts came on curveballs, and the Warriors hit four grounders back to him on the mound.
Argyle broke the game open with a nine-run first inning where they batted around the order. The Warriors committed three errors in the first, and the Orioles had five of their 10 hits. Argyle junior Brock Bruehlman had a two-run single, freshman Cam Treuthardt had an RBI double and senior Alec Treuthardt had a two-run double.
"We have been preaching swinging at strikes and hitting your pitch," Bredeson said.
Every player in the Orioles' lineup had at least one hit led by freshman Colin Argue who went 2-for-2.
Argyle will take on Albany in a regional championship game Friday.
"We have our best guy (Alec Treuthardt) on the mound, and they have their best in Mitchell Kauk," Bredeson said. "I wouldn't call it a rubber match. We are not looking back at what has happened. It's a one game season. This is the only game that matters. We are going to come ready to play."
Shulls.-Benton 9, Pecatonica 3
BLANCHARDVILLE - In one of the toughest regional tournaments in the state with four of the state's top nine ranked teams, No. 5 ranked Shullsburg-Benton upended No. 6 ranked Pecatonica 9-3 to end the Vikings' season.
Pecatonica (21-5) committed nine errors and that led to eight unearned runs.
"It's a tough way to end the season with the number of mistakes we had tonight," Pecatonica coach Jim Strommen said. "The thing about the tournament is unless you win it all, your season ends in a loss."
Both of the top two seeded teams were beat Wednesday. Belmont defeated No. 2 ranked Barneveld 3-2. Shullsburg-Benton will now get to host Belmont a regional title game.
Pecatonica junior pitcher Drew Schliem pitched six innings and gave up eight runs, but just one earned run on six hits. He struck out five and didn't issue a walk.
Pecatonica's Chase Norton went 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Vikings at the plate.
