OREGON - It's just the second year of the Monroe boys hockey co-op and the Avalanche are looking to make a jump at being competitive in the Badger South Conference.
Oregon scored six first period goals and rode the momentum to a 9-2 win over Monroe Tuesday, Dec. 17. Avalanche senior Matt Hodgson scored the first goal on an assist from Anthony Theisen with 2 minutes, 32 seconds to go in the first period.
"We had a rough first period," Monroe coach Nate Brown said. "Unfortunately, our guys let a couple of goals get them down. Once they get down, it's hard to get back up."
Avalanche senior Jake Trickel scored a goal by rebounding his own shot in the second period.
"They played with Oregon in the second two periods," Brown said. "They have made strides. I'm really impressed with the guys. They are getting better all the time."
The players for the Avalanche are getting used to high school hockey after years of playing club hockey.
"The competition hands down is not a comparison," Brown said comparing high school to club hockey. The guys have had more time on the ice and have played together longer. We will be competitive."
Monroe (1-3, 0-2 Badger South) will host DeForest at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27.
