MONROE - Jeff Newcomer delivered a walkoff RBI single to give the Monroe Brewers a 7-6 win over Shullsburg in 10 innings Sunday, July 21, keeping Monroe's Home Talent League Western Section playoff hopes alive.

With two outs in the 10th inning, Monroe's Scott White was hit by a pitch. White stole second and reached third on an error, and Newcomer came through with a clutch RBI single to give the Brewers their fifth win in six games. With the win, Monroe improved to 7-7, giving them the inside track on the No. 5 seed in the playoffs over Ridgeway (7-8). The top six teams in the Western Section make the playoffs.

"It feels pretty good, especially after what the league did to us earlier taking away two wins," Brewers player-manager Jeff Newcomer said of being penalized earlier in the season. "Everyone is playing good ball. We are getting the clutch hits. We did just enough to hold them off."

Monroe's Mitch Marty went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Drew Geissbuhler went 2-for-5 with three stolen bases. Newcomer and Ben Conway each added two RBIs.

"It started to get a little chippy at the end," Newcomer said. "Ben Conway did a great job on the mound."

Conway pitched 10 innings and gave up six runs (three earned) on 11 hits. He struck out 10 and walked just two.

"He got the ball down and got a lot of ground balls," Newcomer said. "He rolled through the first few innings."

Wiota 8, Dodgeville 5

DODGEVILLE - Wiota kept pace with Argyle in a race for The No. 2 seed in the playoffs with a win over Dodgeville.

Wiota's Jeff Solberg pitched six innings to get the win. He gave up five runs on 11 hits. He struck out two and walked two. Wiota's Nick Flannery tossed three shutout innings in relief.

"We always have a hard time with Dodgeville," Wiota manager Dick Schliem said. "It was a big win. We are not really hitting the ball well. Our pitching is kind of carrying us."

Argyle (11-4) is in the driver's seat for the No. 2 seed in the playoffs. Wiota (10-4) and Blanchardville (10-3) are also in contention for the spot, which comes with a first-round bye.

"Their record was kind of deceiving because they haven't played three of the top teams - Wiota, Argyle and Monroe," Schliem said, of Blanchardville. "We will wait and see what happens after next week."

Argyle 9, Blanchardville 4

ARGYLE - Cory Stamm had two hits and drove in two runs to lead Argyle to a 9-4 win over Blanchardville Saturday, July 20.

Stamm went 2-for-5 and Lee Bohlman went 2-for-3 to lead the Beavers. Argyle's Justin Crotty pitched eight innings and gave up three earned runs on 10 hits. He struck out eight and walked three. Jarret Bauman pitched a perfect ninth for the Beavers.

Blanchardville's Mike Pleimling pitched six innings and gave up just one hit. However, Pleimling was plagued by six walks. He walked in a run and the Beavers scored on a groundout, a suicide squeeze and an error. Blanchardville's Tannar Johnson pitched one inning and took the loss after giving up three runs in the seventh. The Beavers also scored three runs in the ninth off of Blanchardville's Dave Cleary. Blanchardville committed four errors.

Blanchardville's Devin Jeglum went 2-for-4 with two doubles. Milt Kurschner was 2-for-4 and Pleimling were each 2-for-4.

Blanchardville has to play three of the top five teams with three games to go.

"If we win out and Wiota wins out, we will be tied," Argyle player-manager Travis Erickson said. "We split two games this year. I'm not sure of the tiebreaker. It could get very interesting Sunday night trying to find out who goes where. We did our part and beat Blanchardville, which was the No. 2. It was a must-win game for us."
