JUDA - The Monticello volleyball team finished 2-1-1 at the season-opening Six Rivers Jamboree to take second place in the gold-bracket tournament Saturday, Aug. 31.
"We got stronger as the tournament went on," Monticello coach Scott Smice said. "We didn't sideout very strong. We finished playing our best volleyball."
Monticello split two sets with River Ridge in pool play dropping the first set 25-23 and then rebounding to win the second set 25-13. The Ponies knocked off Black Hawk 25-11, 25-17. In gold bracket play, Dodgeville defeated the Ponies 25-20, 24-26, 15-13. The Ponies scored eight straight points at the end of the second set against the Dodgers to force a decisive third set. The Ponies closed out the tournament beating Darlington 25-16, 25-13.
Smice said the Ponies had a 92 percent passing rate and an 84 percent serving mark in the tournament.
"I was happy with our passing and serving," Smice said.
Monticello senior Marissa Berg had a team-high 21 kills and eight blocks. Junior Alyssah Kubly had 14 kills and six blocks.
Monticello senior Clare Bruns racked up 57 assists and notched five aces. Senior teammate Claire Geitzel had 10 aces to lead the Ponies.
"Their attitudes were great," Smice said. "It was good to get the season started on the right foot."
Albany finished the tournament 1-2-1. Darlington defeated Albany in pool play 25-16, 25-16. The Comets then split a pool match with Ithaca 25-12, 11-25. In the bronze bracket, Albany defeated Juda in three sets 25-21, 22-25, 15-13. Black Hawk then knocked off the Comets 25-22, 23-25, 15-9.
"I thought we matched up pretty well," Albany coach Connie Wunschel said. It was exciting to see those girls compete with those two teams (Juda and Black Hawk) and be right there."
Albany senior Ashlee Berra had a team-high 19 kills, 32 digs and seven blocks. Junior Alexis Kennedy added 11 kills. Albany junior Felicia Conley had 24 assists and junior Liz Schroeder had six blocks.
