VERONA - For a second staight day, junior Kyle Bruce of Monroe had to deal with intense heat and gusty winds at the WIAA Division 2 state golf tournament at University Ridge Tuesday.
He started the day tied for 14th place after shooting an 81 on Monday. For the second round, Bruce started well, making par on No. 1 and reaching the green on the par 5 No.2 in two shots. He just missed an eagle putt and tapped in for a birdie and found himself at one under par after the first two holes.
The rest of the front nine didn't didn't go as well for Bruce. He double bogeyed the two par 3's and triple bogeyed No. 9 and finished the front nine with a 9-over-par 45.
Bruce started the back nine with a birdie on No. 10, but ran into trouble on No.12 where he double bogeyed the par 3 after his tee ball ended up in the sand.
Bruce shot a 40 for the back nine and a total 13-over-par 85. His total score for the state tournament was 166 which put him in a tie for 26th place along with Cole Johnson of Osceola.
Gene Kiela III of Plymouth was the individual Division 2 champion with a two-day total of 142.
