MONROE - Junior Skylar Lassen had a hand in winning four events to propel the Monroe-New Glarus girls swimming team to a 109-58 win over Fort Atkinson Tuesday at the Green County YMCA.
Lassen won the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 4.5 seconds and finished first in the 100 backstroke (1:12.92). The Cheesemakers won eight of the 11 events and swept the top two spots in five events including the 200 medley relay, 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke and the 100 breaststroke.
The Cheesemakers set 19 personal-record times in the dual meet. Lassen set PRs in both the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. With the win, Monroe-New Glarus improves to 4-3, 2-43 Badger South in dual meets.
"They have been building and building," Monroe-New Glarus coach Linda Moser said. "It's so nice that all the hard work has paid off. It's one thing to win. What I look for as a coach and what they truly look for is the PRs. They have set goals for themselves for the end of the season. You can win every meet, but if you don't meet your goals in the end, than what have you really accomplished?"
New Glarus sophomore Maddie Hammer won the 100 breaststroke with a PR of 1:24.26 and took second in the 200 freestyle with a PR of 2:24.90. Monroe sophomore Grace Keith finished first in the 200 IM (2:44.34), which was her best time this season by 13 seconds and took second in the 400 freestyle (5:12.14).
New Glarus senior Anna Wolf won the 100 butterfly with a PR of 1:14.48 and was second in the 200 IM with a PR of 2:46.77. Lassen and Hammer teamed with senior Abby Oudinot and Keith to win the 200 medley relay (2:14.26). The Cheesemakers' 200 freestyle relay team of Hammer, freshman Emily Meritt, senior Anna Meritt and Oudinot took first (2:02.10), which was a little more than one second ahead of the Blackhawks. Wolf and Lassen teamed with freshman Nina Schiro and Keith to win the 400 freestyle relay (4:25.86).
The Cheesemakers were coming off a dual meet win over Oregon, which marked their first Badger South Conference dual meet win in five years. Now, Monroe-New Glarus has won two straight conference dual meets.
"These two wins will help the girls to stay focused and positive knowing that they can be competitive in the water," Moser said.
Emily Meritt took second in the 100 butterfly with a PR of 1:24.58 and second in the 100 breaststroke with a PR of 1:38.71. Schiro added a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:14.41).
Monroe-New Glarus edged Fort Atkinson 31-30 to win the junior varsity meet.
"They keep on moving closer to that goal they have set for themselves with each PR they swim," Moser said.
Monroe-New Glarus will host Stoughton Oct. 13 at the Green County YMCA.
"This will be a very close meet," Moser said. "They will need to work hard in practice and fine tune their strokes, turns and starts even more to be ready for Stoughton," Moser said.
