FREEPORT- The Monroe girls tennis team went unbeaten and cruised to the championship of the Freeport Quad Saturday, Aug. 31.
Monroe defeated Freeport 7-0, beat Belvidere North 6-1 and knocked off Dixon 5-2. The Cheesemakers finished the day 7-2 in singles matches and 11-1 in doubles.
"This win will give the girls a little confidence heading into the conference season," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "Our three singles players came out and played smart consistent tennis."
In the match against the Pretzels, the Cheesemakers won every match. At No. 1 singles, Monroe senior Allie Coplien defeated Freeport's Jackie Luecke 10-4 and at No. 2 singles, Monroe's Chelsea Miller defeated Andrea Crase 10-7. Eva Priewe at No. 3 singles defeated Freeport's Maya Rockwell 10-1.
The Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles duo of seniors Ellie Grossen and Chandra McGuire defeated Freeport's Abby Jungles and Ericka Hasken 10-5. Grossen and McGuire are 10-0 this season.
"These two had stretches where they were mentally into it, hitting their shots well and just taking over the match at times," Saugstad said. "They got a little tentative at times, but each match, I'm seeing improvements from them."
At No. 2 doubles, Paige Prien and Erin Gellings defeated Freeport's Brandi Yoder and Brittany Stolfus 10-2 and the Cheesemakers' No. 3 doubles team of Alisa Fager and Katie Demianiuk defeated Danielle Marshall and Megan Hayuna 11-9.
