Monroe slices Milton to end regular season

MONROE - Sophomore Tyler Johnson scored four goals to earn a hat trick to lead the Monroe Avalanche to a 7-4 win over Milton in the regular season finale Friday.

Monroe's Cade Martin added two goals in the victory. With the win, Monroe (2-19, 1-9 Badger South) snapped a seven-game losing streak heading into the regional. Monroe received a No. 11 regional seed and will play sixth-seeded Beloit Memorial in a regional quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Edwards Ice Arena.

"Everyone played well tonight and it showed," Monroe coach Josh Smith said. "We earned our first conference win."

Martin scored an unassisted goal at 6 minutes, 32 seconds in the first period to put the Avalanche on the board. Johnson scored his first goal on a pass from Martin with 38 seconds to go in the first period.

Martin scored his second goal at 8:14 in the second period to give the Avalanche a 3-1 lead. Johnson scored his second goal on an assist from Mitch Einbeck at 7:58 to give the Avalanche a commanding 4-1 lead.

The Red Hawks answered with two third period goals to cut the Avalanche's lead to 4-3. The Avalanche closed the second strong with Johnson scoring a goal on an assist from Martin and Dennis Neary scoring his first career goal to give Monroe a 6-3 lead.

"It's a great way to end the season and lead into next year," Smith said.

Johnson scored his fourth goal at the 4:31 mark in the third period. Monroe goaltender Dan Guilliams had 30 saves. The Avalanche outshot the Red Hawks 14-9 in the second period when they scored four goals.

"Danny had a fantastic game in net," Smith said.
