MONROE - With just 16 days left until the Badger Conference Tournament, Monroe's girls tennis team is in full swing. The Cheese-makers showed off their skills in a 6-1 victory over Oregon Tuesday.
"We weren't sure how strong Oregon would be this year," Monroe head coach Stephanie Miller said. "We told the girls to come out and play their best. They did. They played well and got the job done."
The Cheesemakers swept all four singles matches, with Kristin McArdle cruising through her No. 1 singles match against Alyssa Reifert 6-0, 6-1.
"I'm working on hitting it hard and moving to the net and finishing every point," McArdle said. "That way when I get into a tough match later playing that way is more natural to me."
Ellie Shuda won the No. 2 singles match, knocking off Martha Rose Sommers 6-0, 6-1. Lilly Priewe came back from a 4-1 deficit the second set to beat Lauren Bucheger 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles and Alyssa Quinn topped Madison Slepica in the No. 4 singles match 6-2, 6-1.
"Some of our top players maintained their pace and played where we expected them too. But some of the other girls really dominated," Miller said. "Lily and Alyssa played great. They each had good practices (Monday) and then great matches (Tuesday)."
Monroe's No. 1 doubles team of Kelsey Erickson and Brooke McBain blanked Melissa Eyers and Jenna Sanford in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Elisabeth Brunner and Ellie Grossen picked up the No. 3 doubles win against Gabby Swenson in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Cheesemakers' No. 2 doubles team of Becca Flannery and Rachel Thompson lost 6-2, 6-2.
With just over two weeks left until conference, and three weeks until sectionals, the tennis season is already winding down for the Cheesemakers.
"We've played some really close matches against Edgewood and Fort Atkinson. We need to stay focused on our goal, which is to play well at conference," Miller said. "It's important to maintain what we've worked so hard to get to."
McArdle, a senior, qualified for state a year ago.
"I'm feeling good right now," McArdle said about her game. "I'm trying to play my best. With conference and sectionals coming up, I want to see how far I can make it."
Monroe's next test is Thursday at Monona Grove.
