Monroe shuts down Lodi

LODI - The transition for Monroe senior Alyssa Studer from sweeper to offense has been an instant success.

Studer scored two goals to lift the Cheesemakers to a 3-0 win over Lodi Saturday. A short time after Monroe senior Abbey Schneider got hurt earlier this season, Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill moved Studer to a midfielder position and switched senior Chrissy Marti to sweeper.

"Some players you know will be valuable no matter where you put them," O'Neill said. "Alyssa is one of those players. No matter where you put her (Studer), she will make a contribution on the field. She has been working really hard at the midfield and distributing the ball well."

O'Neill has also been excited with Marti's play.

"Chrissy Marti has been doing a tremendous job at sweeper," O'Neill said. "We felt like Chrissy was up to the job of sweeper."

Leeza Foley scored the first goal for the Cheesemakers off a pass from Kylee Ritschard at 6 minutes, 35 seconds.

Studer scored her first goal on senior Tessa Brown's assist at 47:50 to give the Cheesemakers a 2-0 lead. Studer then scored a second unassisted goal off a direct free kick at 69:01 to put the Blue Devils away.

With the win, Monroe improves to 8-6-1, 2-3 Badger South. The Cheesemakers host Monona Grove at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Honey Creek Park.
