MONROE - Gus Werhane had a hat trick to lead the Monroe Avalanche boys hockey team to its first win in the history of the program, 7-0 over Madison La Follette Thursday night.
"They were all smiles in the locker room," Avalanche coach Nate Brown said. "They showed what kind of hockey team they are. This team deserves it. They have worked really hard."
The Avalanche (1-10) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after first period goals by T.J. Parrent of Freeport and Jarrett Warden of Parkview. Albany's Johnny Kallgren and Monroe's Nick Gross both scored in the second period to extend the lead to 4-0.
Werhane, of Lena, scored all three goals in the third period. Werhane also notched an assist in the game, along with Warden and Brett Jones. The Avalanche out-shot La Follette 52-10.
"Everyone contributed to this win," Brown said. "They had faith in each other and it showed. They had great communication, movement of the puck and passing."
Avalanche goalie Anthony Theisen had 10 saves.
"Anthony played amazing to get the shutout," Brown said.
