Monroe comeback falls short

MONROE - The Monroe boys hockey co-op team lost its fifth straight game 5-3 to Viroqua in a nonconference clash Satuarday at SLICE Arena.

Monroe (1-7) got on the board first when sophomore Travis Edmunds scored a goal on an assist by freshman Cade Janecke at 8 minutes, 16 seconds in the first period. About a minute later, Viroqua forward Jake Krause scored a game-tying goal on a pass from Harry Hughes. Viroqua finished with four goals in the first and led 4-1.

Viroqua's Jacob Ellefson scored a go-ahead goal on an assist by Nathan Turnipseed to give the Blackhawks a 2-1 lead. The Cheesemakers outshot the Viroqua 44-19. Janecke had two assists for the Cheesemakers.

Argyle's Broc Kuberski scored a goal on an assist from Janecke at 1:04 in the second to help the Cheesemakers cut the Blackhawks' lead to 4-2. Sophomore Ty O'Connor (Orangeville) scored the Cheesemakers' second goal with 22 seconds to go in the second on an assist by freshman Luke Kuberski (Argyle) to help Monroe slice the Blackhawks' lead to 4-3.

Viroqua's Garrison Korn scored an insurance goal late in the third. Monroe sophomore goaltender Heath Bear had nine saves and freshman Jayden Johnson had five saves.
