MONROE - The Monroe boys basketball team will get a rematch against Mount Horeb in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal on March 1.
The WIAA released the regional tournament seeds and pairings on Sunday.
Monroe (5-16, 2-9 Badger South) received a No. 11 seed and will open regional play at Mount Horeb, the WIAA Division 2 defending state champion.
Monroe coach Pat Murphy wasn't surprised the Cheesemakers received a No. 11 seed.
"I thought with the number of high quality teams in our sectional we had a shot at a No. 10," Murphy said. "We thought we would be a No. 10 or 11 seed based on our record."
Instead, Baraboo received the No. 10 seed. Monroe lost a game earlier this month to Mount Horeb 66-49.
"We are trying to build off the momentum we got from Friday beating Edgewood," Murphy said. "We have to find a way to get after them like they got after us last time."
The Vikings defeated the Cheesemakers 66-44 in the regional semifinals last year on their run to the state tournament.
"Everyone is the same for the start of the new season," Murphy said. "Everyone's goal is to go into the tournament playing your best basketball. That is what we are pushing to do this week."
The other first-round regional games scheduled to be played at 7 p.m. March 1 are as follows:
Division 3
Brodhead (7-14, 4-11 Rock Valley South) received a No. 11 seed and will play at No. 6 Lakeside Lutheran.
Division 4
Darlington (15-5, 10-3 SWAL) received a No. 3 seed in the Baraboo sectional and will have a first-round bye. The Redbirds will host the winner of No. 11 Waterloo and No. 6 Cambridge on March 4. Three of the top four seeds in the Baraboo half sectional that includes Darlington are from the SWAL. The SWAL is the only conference that has a winning record in the half sectional, 86-77.
"The seeding went just as it should have gone," Darlington coach Mike Hopkins said. "There were no surprises. That (No. 3 seed) is the position we deserved. We weren't disappointed at all. Deerfield is undefeated in their conference. I really didn't have an argument for a No. 2 seed."
Fifth-seeded New Glarus (13-7, 8-2 Capitol South) will host No. 12 Parkview. If the Glarner Knights win, they could face Cuba City in a regional semifinal March 4. There is the potential for New Glarus and Darlington to meet in a sectional semifinal.
Division 5
Pecatonica (17-4, 9-2 Six Rivers East) received a No. 3 seed in the La Crosse Logan sectional. The Vikings will host No. 14 Highland. Six Rivers East Conference champion Barneveld (17-4, 11-0) was awarded a No. 2 seed and will host Wauzeka-Steuben. The Vikings could face the Eagles in a regional championship game.
Argyle (13-7, 6-5) received a No. 2 seed in the Watertown sectional. The Orioles will host No. 15 Johnson Creek. The top seed went to Hustisford.
"We are ecstatic to be the No. 2 seed," Argyle coach Justin Jenson said. "The guys deserve it. We did what we needed to do this season. We have played some of the top teams like Pec and Barneveld tough. I think we will have the home-court advantage as long as we continue to win. This is just the beginning."
Albany (12-9, 5-6) received a No. 5 seed and will host No. 12 Monticello (2-18, 1-9. Black Hawk (9-11, 5-6) got a No. 8 seed and will host No. 9 Williams Bay. If the Warriors knock off Williams Bay, they would play at No. 1 seed Hustisford. Juda (5-15, 1-10) was awarded a No. 11 seed and will play at No. 6 Rio.
