MONROE - Forrest Klug-Hanson and Maria Pecora both had breakout performances for the Monroe track and field teams in a double-dual meet Tuesday.

Klug-Hanson was solid in both the 100- and 200-meter races and the sophomore anchored a strong effort by the 400 relay unit as the Cheesemakers boys defeated Madison Edgewood 83-62 and topped Fort Atkinson 80-65.

Pecora, a senior, won the pole vault with a big improvement on her personal record and joined classmate Maria Eberle and sophomore Taylor Barrett in leading the Monroe girls, who lost 94-51 to Edgewood and 70-62 to Fort Atkinson.

Monroe coach Curt Miller said Klug-Hanson made a statement in winning the 200 in 23.5 seconds, finishing second in the 100 in 11.4 and anchoring a second-place finish by the 400 relay team.

"His 200 time was a great time and he ran a very good 100," Miller said of Klug-Hanson. "It was a real big day for him. He's only a sophomore and he's kind of separating himself into the better group of sprinters in (the Badger Conference), which is good to see."

Miller said seeing Jake Hirsbrunner win the high jump with an effort of 6 feet, 2 inches was good to see as well. The sophomore has been sidelined by a knee injury.

"He not only made 6-2, he looked good doing it," Miller said. "It's good to see him back and high jumping at a high level again."

Other individual winners for Monroe included senior Skyler Stingley in the 300 hurdles (42.5), junior Steve Christiansen in the 800 (2:05.8), junior A.J. Cifuentes in the 3,200 (10:37.5) and sophomore Grant Keith in the pole vault (11-0). The Cheesemakers won two relay events, senior Matt Bush, junior Nick Gross, Stingley and Cifuentes taking the 3,200 in 8:33.2 and Bush, junior Alex Barenklau, senior Jon Becker and sophomore Dakota Phillips winning the 1,600 in 3:36.1.

Pecora won the girls pole vault with a leap of 9 feet.

"That's a nine-inch (personal record) for a senior who has worked really hard," Miller said of Pecora. "We're really excited to see her make that jump. She made the transition to a different pole tonight and she really took it to the next level."

Eberle won the 200 (27.6), Barrett took the high jump (5-0) and they both joined freshman Mackenzie Hesgard and sophomore Tre Voegeli in winning the 400 relay in 54.6.

"Eberle ran down two girls from a long way away on the anchor leg," Miller said. "She had a great anchor leg, and Taylor didn't expect to be in the 400 but got thrown in there at the last minute. It's nice to be able to count on kids like that."

Monroe's other individual winners were freshman Corlissa Robertson in the 100 hurdles (17.7) and junior Tabitha Egli in the discus (76-5).
